Watching the process video for the Bunny Baum style study in Ex 4.1 will give you a good idea of my lineless process: I complete a sketch in one of the pencil brushes, then proceed to draw on layers UNDER the sketch, lining out the shapes with the ink bleed brush before filling them with the fill tool, and building each individual body part on a layer above or beneath the adjacent body parts (eventually I would have to merge layers as I went, since I almost exceeded Procreate’s 55-layer limit). This would later inspire some text effects I’d produce with Exercise 4.2, with Photoshop and the typefaces in the posters! The text was done in the Chalk brush from Procreate’s ‘Calligraphy’ section, which is a section of brushes that have a great stability for producing text! The shadow effect was created by duplicating the text layer and setting the bottom layer to Colour Burn mode. I used the Flare brush to create that dominant sparking powerful light effect on the sword’s tip, and one of the Metallic brushes for the subtle gleam of the sword metal. I then played with this cover for a non-existent middle-grade book (maybe one I’d like to write or have a hand in someday) using some similar brushes – it took several days, with each individual character taking hours at a time! The sword effects utilised two of Procreate’s more weird, experimental brushes.

This self-portrait was created for the home page of my professional portfolio site! I played around with shading, a painterly style, and alternate brushes! Distinguishing lines were done with Procreate’s 6B pencil, colouring and edges with the Ink Bleed brush, shading and blush with the airbrush and a more transparent version of the Round Brush, and the textured background was done with the Fresco brush! Supplementary to the style experimentation I was tasked to do in Exercise 4.1, I decided to experiment more with the Procreate app, its brushes, and the particular alternate lineless style I have been developing! It’s good for one’s portfolio to have multiple styles at one’s disposal, as that helps to draw in a more diverse range of clients and projects – which is what Section 4 was all about! Hello! As I’ve just finished my work for Section 4, I felt it apt that I compile some of my non school-related work completed within this time, to show how I’ve been working with extra-curricular creative endeavours, as well as how I’ve been actually developing the skills I’ve learned in this section of my OCA course!
